THE PATH OF LIFE.

The Big DayMarch 1st, 2012
The big day is here.

My recent thoughts.

My heart and prayers go to Trayvon Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin. Generally, I am a cool headed guy, I obey the law and respect people in most circumstances, but I cannot promise to be calm and collected at all times. I am not one who would suffer peaceful, turn the other cheek meekly, smile while dogs are turned on me. There definitely comes a time in a man’s life when he has to take the bull by its horns literally. If attacked in my house, I reserve all the rights, judicial and extra-judicial to defend my life, family, honour, dignity and property with all the wherewithal that I can muster without due regard to phony human rights and force being commensurate with the attack .

The story of the Civil Rights Movement in America is a story written in red blood, blood shed by innocent men, women and children but read in gilded gold letters of the triumph of the just cause. Their only crime being either the pigment of their skin, or association with members of those with the darker skin. Jim Crow’s laws were swiftly and boldly effected to defend the supremacy of the satanic white supremacists who would even kill their fellow brothers for daring to stand up to them and defend the basic human rights of the black people. The stories narrated in Parting the waters: America in the King years by Taylor Branch on the injustice meted on the black people and their white associates by the establishment are acts capable of being carried out by a people possessed by Lucifer and his agents.  But even now, it seems that the struggle is still on, the clarion call is still aluta continua!

The philosophy that holds one race superior and another one superior is till alive and kicking in modern day America. In the Novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the lawyer Atticus is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man wrongly accused of raping a young white woman, Mayella Ewell. The able and competent lawyer seeks justice for his client from the court of law which apparently is not keen on serving justice, but dispensing racial hatred and white supremacy. For despite glaring evidence of perjury and factual inconsistence from the prosecutions witnesses, the jury finds Tom Robinson guilty as charged who subsequently ends up as a trophy of the white supremacists. What is evident from the storyline is that judiciously good people will always stand up for what is right irrespective of their colour, and I find Atticus to be an epitome of such a breed. In apartheid South Africa, white people were at the forefront in defending black people against the evils of sgragation, among them Nadine Gordimer,  and Nelson Mandela‘s defense attorneys Bram Fischer and George Bizos.

Johnnie Cochran Junior made a name for himself defending defenseless people against the powers that be in Los Angeles, the poor black victims of police brutality. He defended people whose only crimes were walking while black. The LAPD had become notorious for getting away with murder, and they had to be stopped in their tracks. The weapon of choice was the indefatigable Johnnie Cochran Junior. I read his exploits in his autobiography, The Journey to Justice with relish. Here was a man who was making the police and the entire DA’s office pay for their mistakes, and pay they did pay.

In 1955 in Mississippi, Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black teen was beaten and murdered, fast forward to 26th February, 2012. Trayvon Martin an unarmed 17-year-old black teen carrying a bag of skittles and a can of iced tea is shot and murdered in cold blood by a self-described neighborhood volunteer, George Zimmerman who pursued, chased and killed him. A vigilante who is not legally allowed to accost anyone, leave alone apprehend. This is a killer who couldn’t even make the pass for the police department. His actions were out rightly ultra vires from the rights and duties due to a community volunteer or vigilante.  This killer has not been arrested, is roaming free reason being because of a Florida “Stand Your Ground” law which allows a significant leeway for people to use deadly force if they believe is in danger. I first read of castle doctrine from the writings of James Otis, Jr. In present day America, I understand it is currently codified into the “stand your ground law” in some states. I have read, Zimmerman negated his ability to claim immunity under the law by
chasing Martin. “Anyone who is out pursuing and confronting people is not
protected by this statute.”  I have also read that it is a fact that it doesn’t matter if you shoot someone in self defense or not, you will be arrested; have your weapon confiscated because it is not the job of the police to determine guilt, which will be up to the prosecuting attorney. Over a month later, the killer is free while the police are busy doing background checks on the victim.

If the police cannot arrest the killer of Trayvon, and I was Trayvon father, I would resort to the good Old Testament scriptures, and I would go out and seek justice my own way. Justice served the way Malcolm X wished it to be served, intelligently, defending yourself. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a head for a head and a life for a life, fair and square. If any dog, either two legged of four legged puts his hand on my innocent child, I will dispatch him to the next world.
